Abbie Hull Steward
Can you tell me about some of your most enjoyable moments of the trip?
I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the children and forming close relationships with them, especially at Yangshuo where the same group of children were there for a long period of time so I could really get to know them.
Which were the highlights of the lessons, cultural excursions and outdoor activities?
I also enjoyed having the time to do activities with the children, one of my favourite activities was white water drifting. Exploring caves and camping with the children was also great fun as you got time to interact with them more closely and get to know them better. I also enjoyed going on a river cruise especially when we were able to find the beauty spot used as the image on the 20 Yuan (local currency) note.
How would you say the overall experience has benefited you?
I feel I have gained a lot of confidence through taking part in this experience. I initially found the prospect of standing in front of a class of children quite nerve-racking, however, by the end of the program it became second nature to me. I feel that I am much more confident at public speaking now a skill which will be invaluable for my university course
What was the best thing about your experience in China?
The best thing was easily the teaching experience which I enjoyed and am now considering as a career.
Would you recommend participating to a friend and if so why?
Yes as I had an incredibly enjoyable experience and felt I really grew in confidence as a result.
